Guidelines for Working in South Africa
To practice in South Africa as a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy student, there are specific guidelines to follow.

You are required to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). It is illegal to work in any sector (government, private or non-governmental organisation) as a non-registered practitioner.

Registration is done and monitored by the HPCSA. Direct communication with the HPCSA could help in answering any specific questions that you may have regarding registration. Additional information about the Council could be obtained from the web site www.hpcsa.co.za

In terms of the current policy of the Professional Board for Occupational Therapy, Medical Orthotists/Prosthetics and Arts Therapy, all foreign qualified professionals are required to sit for an entry examination in order to determine whether they can register with the Council.
